 2023 Preview

Central finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 3-6 record. Last year Central finished sixth in Class 1A region four with a 2-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Central took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2018. The Lions have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2023.

Since 2010, the Central football program has struggled with a record of 28-97.

Over the past 25 seasons, Central has not won much with a record of 55-189. Their 22.0% winning percentage ranks 57th in Class 1A and 382nd in the AHSAA. The Lions have struggled on the football field with only four winning seasons during this time.

The Lions are led by head coach Corvin Johnson who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 3-6 record in his first season at Central. The Lions have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Johnson.

The Lions will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region four this season.

The Lions open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Beauregard on Friday, September 1 at Sellers Stadium. Last year the Beauregard Hornets finished with an overall record of 10-2 and in second place in Class 5A region four. The Hornets lost in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs to UMS-Wright by a score of 48-30.

Central and Beauregard have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Lions have a 0-4-0 record against the Hornets. They last met in 2022 with Beauregard winning by a score of 42-14.
